The Newnan Campus offers university courses for students who want to begin and/or continue their education locally. Students may see an advisor, register for courses, order books, and pay fees at the Newnan Campus. In an effort to accommodate the course schedule needs of both traditional and nontraditional students, classes are scheduled in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Students may attend full or part time.
Through a cooperative effort by the University of West Georgia, Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, Coweta County Board of Education, and other business, civic and educational leaders in Newnan and Coweta County, the Newnan Center was established and approved by the Board of Regents in August 1988. Classes began at the Newnan High School with 15 students in 2 classes. In 1990, classes moved to the Georgia Power Shenandoah Environment & Education Center and enrollment grew to 100 students. The 14-acre campus in the Shenandoah Industrial Park was purchased from Georgia Power Company by the Coweta County Commission in 1998. During 2006-07, student enrollment reached 2,200. Approximately 80 credit classes are offered each year; and with the help of our partner organizations, over 20,000 people pass through our doors annually. In early 2009, the ownership of the Newnan Campus will be transferred from the Coweta County Commission to the University System of Georgia. A celebration of this transfer will be held in Newnan in spring of 2009.
